Blues Brothers: Blackfriars raise funds for prostate cancer research

WearItBLUE1

Blue was the colour for Adelaide’s Blackfriars Priory School throughout September as the student body raised vital funds for prostate cancer research.

The school launched its ‘Wear it BLUE!’ campaign at a special Father’s Day liturgy on 28 August, Coinciding with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Speaking at this morning’s Father’s Day Liturgy, Head Prefect Michael Ward said just as our fathers cared for us, we had a responsibility to care for the men in our lives.

“In Australia, many fathers face a silent battle with prostate cancer, a disease that affects thousands of men each year,” he said.

“This illness is a reminder of how precious and fragile life can be and why it’s so important to support research and treatment efforts.

“By supporting prostate cancer research, we are taking a step to protect the health and wellbeing of our fathers, grandfathers, uncles and friends.”

For as little as $5, students, staff and the wider school community could buy blue shoelaces and blue scarves, with all funds going to Australian Prostate Cancer (APC).

And throughout September, students were encouraged to wear their accessories as part of their everyday school attire.

The school’s prefects also cooked a barbeque on 4 September, with the proceeds also going to APC.

The fundraiser was organised by Assistant Principal: Religious Identity and Mission Angela Collins.

Ms Collins said investing in research is crucial, with one in six men in Australia diagnosed with prostate cancer by age 85.

“At Blackfriars, we are always looking for ways to give back to the wider community. We are honoured to be able to do our bit to support research into prostate cancer,” she said.

A huge THANK YOU to the Blackfriars school community for their outstanding fundraising efforts!
